Our oldest is now 12 years old and will be a teenager in less than a year--how can that be?! Caleb's birthday was yesterday, but we chose to start celebrating on Saturday. He didn't want anything fancy this year. No parties...just the normal out to eat at the restaurant of your choice. Since he doesn't get home from baseball practice until around 7:30, we figured we better do our eating out over the weekend & then we could celebrate more on his actual birthday.
Unfortunately, Bobby had to work this past weekend. But you can't keep a good man down, so we opted to meet him in Raleigh to eat so he could join in the fun. Of course the kids always love getting a close look at daddy's police car--they know they have a cool dad. :)
Caleb's restaurant choice (after some slight guidance) was Longhorn Steakhouse. He first chose Golden Corral (yuck!!), but said he really didn't care. So since he loves steak & baked potatoes (and since he rarely is ever allowed to get that when we go out to eat), we kind of helped him choose a good steak place in Raleigh.
And we did it up right. I mean, hey, if you're going to spend a fortune already to feed your brood of seven, why not go all out. We got chili cheese fries & the tunion for a appetizer. Needless to say, Caleb thought he had died & gone to heaven. (especially when he didn't have to order off the kids' menu).
Fast forward now to Monday (the actual birthday). Bobby & I did the traditional eating lunch with him. Bobby stopped by McD's and picked up a Big Mac for the growing boy.
Caleb went easy on me this year and chose creme-filled, chocoate covered doughnuts (I drool as I type that) for his birthday snack to share with the class. He definitely takes after his mother in that craving.
Monday night we all paced the floor waiting for him to come home from baseball practice so we could dig in the birthday "cake". Caleb being a steak & potato man isn't really a dessert fan, especially not a cake fan. So I asked him what he'd like for his cake. He picked a coconut pie (Bobby was thrilled with that pick seeing that is his favorite dessert also). I didn't think the pie would be quite enough to feed us all, so I had to throw in a banana pudding also. Embarrassed to say that we all waddled to bed afterwards.
And of course there were many presents...most of which was cash. He is saving up for a ipod touch, so he was thrilled to get money, money, money.
Happy birthday to you Caleb!! You are growing into a sweet young man, and we are very proud of you! We pray the Lord will use your life as a testament to his mercy & grace.
